city living in a park rich setting

22 On The River overlooks the Mississippi Gorge, and several outstanding parks are at its doorstep.

The Gorge is a unique six-mile stretch of the Mississippi where the river has carved a deep valley with steep limestone bluffs, natural springs and hardwood forests. The Gorge is a true ecological treasure: 30 native fish species thrive in its waters, and it is used as a migration corridor by about 100 species of birds, including 40% of the North American migratory waterfowl. It is surrounded by native ecosystems of rare mesic oak savanna and other deciduous hardwood forests and open prairie meadows.

The Mississippi Gorge Regional Park, which stretches along the east bank of the river from the University of Minnesota to the St. Paul border, is just steps away from the front door of 22 On The River.

Also, the land along the sides of the river forms the Mississippi National River and Recreational Area, a “corridor” park, 72 miles long, that runs through Minneapolis and St. Paul. It has preserved the woodlands and other natural habitats along the river, and offers many peaceful opportunities for fishing, boating and canoeing.

Just across the Mississippi from 22 On The River is the 40-acre Riverside Park, which is on two levels separated by the steep, wooded river bluff and stone stairs.

Scenic off-road paths run on both sides of the Mississippi. Some follow the river from atop the bluffs; others wind down through the Gorge, reaching the river and beautiful quiet beaches. This trail system is excellent for walking, bicycling and hiking, and leads to wonderful spots for bird watching.

22 On The River is next to East River Parkway, a scenic road that follows the river from Minneapolis to St. Paul and offers many beautiful vistas, whether you are driving or taking advantage of the pedestrian and bicycle paths that run along it. East River Parkway and its trails are part of the Grand Rounds Scenic Byway system, a chain of parks and lakes connected by parkways and trails that extends through the city. The Byway connects different park areas beyond the Mississippi River, including the Chain of Lakes, Loring Park and the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden.

The Residents of 22 On The River have at their doorstep a most extensive and scenic network of walking, jogging and running paths, surrounded by mature trees and with outstanding river views. Also, from their front door they can access, through a bicycle lane that runs along 27th Avenue, the extensive Twin Cities bikeway system, which includes over 120 miles of bike trails and lanes, and is one of the best in the country.

Several well-kept neighborhood parks are a short walk from 22 On The River. They include Tower Hill Park, which includes extensive open green areas, tennis courts and the iconic “Witch’s Hat” water tower, Luxton Park, Chergovsky Park and Slovak Park, a “pocket park” adjacent to East River Parkway, which features a spring water tap. They provide beautiful woods, hilly terrain, lovely vistas and a variety of activities for children and adults.
